Hello FRONZ members and affiliates,
You will have seen the tragic news of an incident at Te Awamutu last night that resulted in a person’s death. The incident involved a heritage service, and I know everyone across our sector will be deeply saddened by what has occurred.
FRONZ is providing support in whatever way we can, and will continue to do so. Our thoughts are with the whānau and friends of the person who died, as well as the staff, volunteers and passengers affected.
Please give your love and support to those involved at this incredibly difficult time.
I’m emailing you to clarify reporting by the New Zealand Herald this morning suggesting that NZTA had suspended all heritage rail operations following the incident.
This reporting is incorrect.
NZTA has advised FRONZ that no such order is in place and it is seeking corrections from the media outlets concerned. NZTA has also confirmed that, if any direction affecting an operator were issued, the regulator would contact that operator directly, not through the media.
Unless NZTA contacts you directly, your services can run as scheduled.
Finally, above all, please keep everyone affected by this tragedy at the front of your minds.
Take care of yourselves and one another.
We will be back in touch,
Jeff Tollan
FRONZ President
