Member update: Media

Good afternoon all,

I want to make you aware that journalists are approaching individuals and some organisations for comment following Sunday night’s fatal incident at Te Awamutu.

This includes seeking information about the incident and organisations’ safety systems.

This is normal and expected following a serious incident that attracts a high level of public interest. This email provides guidance on what to do if you are approached for comment.

Most importantly: Journalists are doing their jobs. However, given the ongoing investigations and significant media attention, FRONZ strongly advises members against commenting on the incident, its circumstances, any associated investigation, or their own safety systems without first seeking advice.

Please assume that anything you say to a journalist – including informal conversation or background remarks – may be reported. Even well-intentioned comments or speculation can have unintended consequences.

If approached, you can say:

“Can you please send your query and deadline to me in an email and we will come back to you. My email is [your email address].”

Do not feel pressured to answer follow-up questions, regardless of how informal or “quick” the conversation may appear. And “off the record” is not “off the record”.

We ask that you please advise FRONZ of any media requests relating to this incident by emailing president@fronz.org.nz and secretary@fronz.org.nz. We can then provide you with advice on an appropriate response.

Please also remember that comments made on social media can be quoted or reported, including comments made in private or closed groups. Some potentially sensitive or unverified details have already been shared, and I have privately asked for these to be removed. Our advice is not to post about or engage in discussion of the incident, even to correct information. Please reach out to us instead.

On a separate note, I want to thank everyone who has reached out with messages of support and offers of assistance. I’ll endeavour to respond to you over the coming days, but please know your kind words are very much appreciated.

Finally, I want to acknowledge the ongoing support being provided to those involved in this terrible incident. I know I speak for all of us when I say that our thoughts are with everyone involved.

I’ll be in touch when there is further information to share.

Thank you once again; be kind and go well.

The FRONZ Executive
