The Federation of Rail Organisations of New Zealand (FRONZ) is dedicated to championing the heritage rail and tramway organisations across the country and advocating on their behalf.

Founded in 1975, we’re proud to serve more than 60 organisations and their members, who work tirelessly to keep our history alive.

About FRONZ

The Federation of Rail Organisations of NZ (FRONZ) exists to represent the Heritage & Tourist Rail Industry in New Zealand.

Major functions of the Federation include:

  • Represent members’ interests to government departments and public organisations.
  • Monitor legislation affecting members and make submissions as needed.
  • Negotiate access agreements to the National Rail Network System.
  • Liaise with and negotiate agreements with other major rail industry participants.
  • Define industry standards and training while providing technical information to members.
  • Offer a forum for members to exchange ideas.
  • Appoint specialist convenors to provide advice and information to members.
  • Provide public liability insurance for members.
  • Maintain affiliations with like-minded international organisations.

How FRONZ helps

Running trains, trams, and museums is a lot of work. FRONZ not only advocates on behalf of our members but also:

  • Provides public liability insurance for members.
  • Works with NZTA and KiwiRail on issues affecting members, including audits, access, and rental agreements.
  • Negotiates agreements and liaises with other major rail industry participants.
  • Defines industry standards and training.
  • Provides technical information to members.
  • Facilitates workshops and discussions on key industry issues.

Film and Television

FRONZ collaborates with production companies scouting railway locations or trains for filming and can assist with access and operational agreements. Our members have supplied trains for films such as In My Father’s Den and The Last Samurai, as well as advertisements for cars, beer, chocolate bars, and more.
