The Federation of Rail Organisations of New Zealand (FRONZ) is dedicated to championing the heritage rail and tramway organisations across the country and advocating on their behalf.
Founded in 1975, we’re proud to serve more than 60 organisations and their members, who work tirelessly to keep our history alive.
Over King’s Birthday weekend, FRONZ holds its annual conference in the City of Sails, Auckland.
Conference this year involves a hefty schedule, with visits to a number of Auckland groups.
We are recommending delegates arrive in Auckland by 10am Friday in order to make
the most of the programme, and to be able to have the full day’s experience and tours.
This may mean you wish to fly in on the Thursday and fly out on Monday night, or
Tuesday morning.
Major functions of the Federation include:
Railways and tramways helped build New Zealand and across the country there are dozens of groups dedicated to keeping that history alive. More than 60 of them are members of FRONZ.
With so many museums, rail and tramway groups around Aotearoa, you’re never far from the links to our past.

Members can access FRONZ Public Liability Insurance, which also covers their volunteers.

Get access to qualified training and technical knowledge through RAIL, HOC, and HTC.

The issues you face aren’t unique to your organisation. We work with you to overcome them.
FRONZ collaborates with production companies scouting railway locations or trains for filming and can assist with access and operational agreements. Our members have supplied trains for films such as In My Father’s Den and The Last Samurai, as well as advertisements for cars, beer, chocolate bars, and more.
